A delegation from the German Parliament meets with the Speaker


 While in Sri Lanka, a delegation from the German Parliamentary Friendship Association for South Asia, led by Rinade Künast, met with representatives of the Women's Parliamentary Union, the Sri Lankan German Parliamentary Friendship Association, and Speaker Mahinda Yappa Abeywardena.
There were in-depth talks about enhancing ties between Germany and Sri Lanka during these meetings.

The speaker highlighted Germany's assistance to Sri Lanka via the German Technical Institute and mentioned the strong need for young people trained in this way elsewhere. Additionally, he made the point that Germany ought to keep helping out with these kinds of technical issues.

The Speaker responded to questions from the German delegation regarding the upcoming elections, the International Monetary Fund's support, and the steps made to better the nation.

In the meantime, the German delegation met in the parliamentary committee chamber with Talatha Athukorala, the chairman of the departmental oversight committee on children, women, and gender, and Sudarshini Fernandupulle, the president of the Women Parliamentary Union (Medical Fund). Here, the Union's initiatives to uplift women and children and stop abuse and violence against them were detailed to the German delegation.

The Jamaican delegation was also given an update on the state of affairs regarding early childhood education and child care for working parents.

Additionally, a meeting was arranged between the German delegation and the Sri Lankan German Parliamentary Friendship Association. It was chaired by German Member of Parliament Rinade Kunast and Member of Parliament (Professor) Saritha Herath, who is also the President of the German Parliamentary Friendship Association in Sri Lanka. Member of Parliament H.M. Bowsey, State Minister Aravinda Kumar, Hon. Secretary of the Society Harsha D. Silva, Vice Presidents Niroshan Perera, Harini Amarasuriya, Treasurer Udayana Kirinthikoda, and Iran Wickramaratne are among the members of the Society. Mathura Vithanake and B. Y. G. Ratnasukara were present.

The meeting, according to Hon'ble Charitha Herath, demonstrated both nations' determination to advance their relations and looking for chances that would benefit both of them.

The German delegation was informed about the problems being addressed under the International Monetary Fund program, the upcoming national elections, and the economic difficulties facing the nation. Sri Lankan parliamentarians discussed their stances on this matter. According to Rinade Kunast, encouraging investments requires openness and environmental improvements.

These sessions were also attended by German Ambassador to Sri Lanka Felix Neumann, Assistant Secretary-General Hansa Aberatne, and Parliamentary Acting Secretary-General Samintha Kularatne.
