Protests against the oppression of the police in Vedukunarimalai, Sri Lanka.

Vavuniya: On March 10, 2024, a visually striking demonstration was held in Batticaloa to denounce the police brutality in Vedukunarimalai on the final day of Shivaratri.
At the invitation of Tamil Nationalists, a demonstration was staged in Gandhibunga near the memorial for dead journalists.

During the puja ceremonies at the Vavuniya North Vedukunari Adishivan temple on the day of Shivratri, the police broke into the temple and used heavy repression, arresting eight persons, including the temple priest.

To denounce this, there has been a protest in Batticaloa.

We denounce the government for interfering with Tamils' right to worship; please don't demolish the Adi Shiva temple's property and depart. "You have no right on our land, on our hill, Sinhala oppression even on Shivratri day."

Placards bearing a variety of statements, such as "We condemn the anarchy of the soldiers who prevented the Vedukunari Adisivan Shivratri Puja," were carried out during the demonstration.

The participants in this protest included religious leaders, associations of relatives of the missing persons in the Batticaloa district, civil society activists, and a member of parliament for the Tamil National Federation Govindan Karunakaram. Former members of parliament P. Arianethan, N. Srinesan, and C. Yogeswaran, as well as Tamil national sentiments.
