The 72nd Westminster Conference, held at the prestigious Westminster Parliament in London, England, proved to be a significant gathering for representatives from the Sri Lankan Parliament. Among the distinguished attendees were Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapaksa, Member of Parliament Harini Amarasuriya, and Deputy Secretary General Samintha Kularatna, who participated in the conference from March 11 to 15. This conference served as a platform for parliamentarians and parliamentary officers from 28 Commonwealth nations to convene and discuss various aspects of parliamentary practices and procedures.

Throughout the duration of the conference, attendees engaged in comprehensive discussions covering a wide range of topics pertinent to the functioning of Commonwealth countries' parliaments. These discussions delved into the customs, rights, and powers of parliamentarians, as well as the intricate procedures involved in crafting constitutional plans. Additionally, there was a focus on the utilization of contemporary social media and technology in parliamentary proceedings, as well as research methodologies applicable to legislative activities.

The Sri Lankan delegates actively participated in the conference sessions, contributing their insights and perspectives on parliamentary matters. Their presence underscored Sri Lanka's commitment to engaging with the global community and fostering cooperation among Commonwealth nations in matters of parliamentary governance.

Moreover, the conference provided a unique opportunity for the Sri Lankan delegation to partake in the 75th-anniversary celebrations of the Commonwealth of Nations, organized by the British Parliament. As part of these celebrations, a special service was held at Westminster Abbey in London to commemorate this milestone occasion. The Sri Lankan delegates joined other dignitaries from around the world in honoring the legacy and achievements of the Commonwealth over the past seven and a half decades.

Notably, the absence of King Charles III, due to his illness, was noted during the celebrations. Representing the British royal family at the event were Princess Anne, Prince Edward, Prince William, and Queen Camilla, who conveyed their regards and well wishes on behalf of the ailing monarch.

The participation of Sri Lankan representatives in the Westminster Conference and the subsequent anniversary celebrations underscored the nation's commitment to upholding democratic principles and strengthening parliamentary institutions. By engaging in constructive dialogue and collaboration with fellow Commonwealth nations, Sri Lanka reaffirmed its dedication to promoting good governance, transparency, and accountability in its parliamentary practices.
